The MGB could not have been more different that the MGA. Although probably not as startling as the MGA had been, to enthusiasts of the pre-war Midget design, when it was launched in 1955. The B was a new breed of motor car. With is unitary construction, timeless styling and bullet proof mechanics, the MGB would provide the basis of the MG range for the next two decades.

The single most important change to the MGB was the adoption of American specified ride height and impact bumpers across the board in 1974. This major change splits the MGB into two distinct categories. The change also came along in the midst of the production of the BGT V8, so early cars are chrome bumper models, while post 74 cars have the 5mph impact bumpers.

The example offered here is a later car, which became a test car for MG's Special Developments Division from new. The car was used to test a myriad of components with most tests carried at the world famous MIRA testing facility in the Midlands. It is said that virtually every component on the car was replaced at some stage in the cars 5 year testing career but these included, suspension, exhausts, transmissions, brakes, tyres and wheels, ignition systems, radiators, steering racks, aerodynamics, different lighting and much more.

Sold on the open market in 1979, complete with a new SD1 engine and in original factory specification the car has been in the hands of enthusiast owners ever since and has been the subject of considerably more works. This has included new rear axle, front and rear hubs, kingpin assemblies, rear springs and shocks, brake discs and callipers, new clutch and flywheel, new fuel tank, new front wings (2) rear wing (1) bonnet and both doors.

Said to be in excellent condition the vendor has also equipped the car with a stainless steel exhaust system, copper nickel brake pipes, Mallory distributor and electronic ignition booster, high efficiency radiator core and front undershields. The all alloy 3.5 litre, V8 engine was also rebuilt some 10,000 miles ago.

This unique piece of MG history is offered complete with all of the original test records, a current MoT through to May 2007 and road tax through to October 2006.
