The Mercedes R107 SL was introduced in 1971 and continued along the same basic design principals as the 113 Pagoda, but was a little bigger and a little bit wider. The disappearing hood mechanism, with the removable hard-top, remained and the engine options now included the 3.5 litre V8, which powered the new saloon range. The R107 SL was a hugely successful model, which remained in production for 18 years, largely unchanged. Engine options expanded to include a 2.8 and in 1986 a 3.0 straight six and V8's, which expanded to 5.6 litre by the end of the production run in 1989, when it was replaced by the new 129SL.
This 1986 Mercedes R107 420 SL has been owned by the vendor since September 2014, with two previous owners, though was originally a company car for the first owner so shows 4 previous owners on the V5. The vendor had the car assessed by the SL Shop in Spring 2015, and worked through their remedial action list using a classic car specialist engineer. The SL Shop commented the bulkhead was one of the cleanest they had seen.
Many thousands of pounds have been spent on the car since then, including bodywork remedial action, a complete respray and paintwork protection, new tyres, a new hood, and complete retrim to blue leather. The aircon compressor has been replaced, new bushes, brake calipers, exhaust, exhaust manifold, radiator, the list goes on!
The original brochure, handbook and service book are present, though as a company car, no access available to prior invoices etc. There is a full file of work carried out by the vendor. The hardtop is included and could benefit from some attention, though is never needed for the car.
The vehicle is an excellent cruiser and can be used as an everyday car if so required and turns head.
