The 280 SL W113 Pagoda was produced from December 1967 to February 1971. Over the years, the W 113 evolved from a sports car into a comfortable grand tourer, and were by then usually equipped with the 4-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. Manual transmission models came with the standard 4-speed or the optional ZF 5-speed. In Europe, manual transmissions without air conditioning were still the predominant choice. The engine was the 2,778 cc M130 engine with 170 bhp and 180 ft/lbs of torque. The performance improvement was achieved by increasing bore by 4.5 mm (0.2 in), an oil-cooler was fitted vertically next to the radiator. Each engine was now bench-tested for two hours prior to being fitted. Of the 23,885 280 SLs produced, more than half were sold in the US.
The Mercedes 280 SL Pagoda Auto offered here is an original UK RHD car and is rare in black. The car is described by the vendor to be in very good condition all round and to be a joy to drive. The vendor has had the car for about 30 years and has known the car for about 40 years.
The car comes with a hard top and a substantial box of history. There has been substantial recent expenditure for new interior, front lights (£3,500 each) new front grille (£4,500) and new chrome bumpers. All supplied by Mercedes. The car will be serviced and given a new MoT prior to the auction. The 280 SL Pagodas are hard to find in right hand drive which makes this a rare chance to purchase one from auction.
