The Ferrari 308 GTB Berlinetta and Targa 308 GTS were manufactured from 1975 to 1985, and replaced the Dino 246 GT and GTS in 1975.
The 308 had a tube frame with separate body. The engine was a V8 of a 90 degree configuration, with belt-driven twin overhead camshafts per cylinder bank. It was transversely mounted in unit with the trans-axle transmission assembly, which was below and to the rear of the engine's sump. All models used a fully synchromesh 5-speed manual and a clutch-type limited slip differential. Suspension was all-independent, comprising double wishbones, coaxial coil springs and hydraulic dampers, and anti-roll bars on both axles; four wheel vented disc brakes were also fitted. Steering was unassisted rack and pinion.
The 308's body was designed by Pininfarina's Leonardo Fioravanti, who had been responsible for some of Ferrari's most celebrated shapes to date such as the Daytona, the Dino and the Berlinetta Boxer. The 308 used elements of these shapes to create something very much in contrast with the angular GT4. GTS models featured a removable roof panel with grained satin black finish, which could be stowed in a vinyl cover behind the seats when not in use.
The vendor tells us that this Rosso Red 308 GTS QV, with very low mileage, is finished in Rosso Corsa with a Nero leather interior. It was originally supplied in Dusseldorf Germany to its first owner with the factory fitted options of air conditioning, electric windows and a rear aerofoil. It is also understod that the 'Koenig' body styling was also fitted at this time by the supplying dealer.
In 1985 the original owner sold the car to a member of the US forces, and the car was expoted to Florida, with an indicated mileage of 3,100. This gentleman was developing a collection of cars and this car was added to his growing collection. The car remained in in this collection for a further 30 years with very little use, so little, that it only covered an additional 3,000 or so miles. The current vendor of this amazing car imported it back to the UK in early 2015. Being in a static collection for a lot of years and being infrequently used, the Ferrari needed work to get it back to its best, so Ferrari dealer, Carrs of Exeter, were given the task of fully recommission this rather special 308. In the history file are invoices dated October 2015 detailing a comprehensive service, cam and ancillary belts replacement, and full brake overhauled. At this time, in the interests of safety, new Pirelli P7 tyres were sourced and fitted. The car comes with its original Ferrari owners book pack, tool kit, 2 keys and V5C. This is three-owner Ferrari 308 GTB QV with less than 7,000 recorded miles, and that makes it a very desirable car to acquire, especially with the very its realistic reserve.
