The Golf Cabriolet was sold from 1980 to 1993. It had a reinforced body, transverse roll bar, and a high level of trim, and kept the pre-1980 style of rear lamp clusters. The Mk1 Cabriolet is of unibody construction built entirely at the factory of Karmann, from stamping to final assembly. Volkswagen supplied the engine, suspension, interior, etc. for Karmann to install. The vinyl or cloth tops were heavily insulated and manually - or beginning in 1991, electrically operated, with a heated glass rear window. The body of the Cabriolet did not change through the entire production run except for a larger fuel tank. The space saver wheel was fitted from the outset in 1978, when pre production models were built, unlike the saloon which adopted this in 1984. In an attempt by Volkswagen to keep the car's styling current, all Cabriolets from 1988 on were fitted with a "Clipper" kit out of the factory, featuring smooth body-coloured bumpers, wheelarch extensions, and side skirts.
This stunning Volkswagen Golf Convertible is a late example in pearl white, that has been subject to a full rally sport conversion, and has only covered approx. 5,000 miles since the conversion. The 16V engine has been upgraded with twin fast road camshafts, valves and cam followers. The car has also been fitted with twin Webber carburettors, a high efficiency fuel pump, turbo fuel regulator and other fuel enhancing fitments. Other upgrades include 16 valve radiator, 16 valve brake servo, lowered sport suspension, Isola steering wheel, Lenso BSX road wheels, full front to rear Powerflow stainless steel exhaust system including down pipes and manifold, new woollen front carpet set, sports black leather seats, new windscreen, upper rear chrome strut brace, VW Sportline factory body styling, new battery, new unused spare wheel and tyre.
The original vinyl hood is still in reasonable condition, however a brand new genuine mohair hood is supplied with the car for fitting by any new lucky owner. The car has had a full service and tuning due to being in storage for some time and starts, runs and sounds excellent. The car has never been welded underneath and appears to be completely rust free on the upper body. There is a good history file, V5 and a fresh MoT.
