The Reliant Scimitar GTE ( Gran Turismo Estate) was launched at the Motor Show in London in October 1968. Designed by Tom Karen of Ogle, this fastest estate car in the world at the time was an immediate success. This created a long waiting list for eager purchasers including Princess Anne who has had several GTEs over the years.
At the time the Scimitar GTE was unique combining sports car performance (0to 60mph in 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 120mph) with 4 usable seats and a carrying capacity of up to 36 cu ft. No wonder that the GTE continued in production in various forms until 1986 with Middlebridge cars made in small numbers until 1990.
The example offered here is one of the earliest GTEs ever made being the SE5 model, and still retains all the original features including the flat top dash similar to the SE4, which it replaced, and has the optional and sought after alloy wheels fitted.
The car was used regularly by the previous owner and had been maintained in good working order with some practical improvements, such as stainless steel exhaust, stainless steel fuel tank and an electric radiator fan. The underneath of the car appears to be excellent including the chassis. The interior of the car is very original and in lovely condition. It has recently had new quality carpets fitted, and there is a period radio with ipod connection in the glove box. Chrome work is good/fair, as is the body, with no sign of osmosis. Paintwork shines and is presentable but could benefit in the future from refinishing in places.
