The Rover 3500 was introduced in April 1968, and continued until 1977. The car's maximum speed of 114 mph as well as its 10.5-second acceleration time from 0–60 mph were considered impressive. It was necessary to modify the under-bonnet space for the V8 engine, the front suspension cross-member had to be relocated forward, while a more visible change was an extra air intake beneath the front bumper to accommodate the larger radiator. A 3-speed Borg Warner 35 automatic was the only transmission, until the 1971 addition of a four-speed manual 3500S model, fitted with a modified version of the gearbox used in the 2000/2200. The 3500S was noticeably quicker than the automatic version of this car with a 0-60 mph time of 9 seconds, compared with 10.5 for the automatic car.
This 1974 Rover 3500 was originally supplied to Mr John Deighton by Lex Mead in Southampton. He used it until he died in 1990, and his wife continued to use it until late 2004, when it was purchased from her by the vendor's husband. The car is presently showing 74,140 miles, which is warranted. The car has a stamped-up service history, mainly main dealer, in 2 British Leyland/Austin Rover service books, up to 69,869 miles. There are further service bills, mainly by Gates Engineering of Brockenhurst, up to 72,588 miles. There are also quite a few other invoices for work done on the car at this time. The car was last MOT'd in November 2020 at 73,571 miles, and in the DVLA MOT history, the word "corrosion" never appears! The car comes with what appears to be a complete owners pack, including the original plastic folder, and there is a very comprehensive log book filled in with every journey, service, petrol used, oil used etc from 1984 to 1990. .
The car is described by the vendor as being in very good condition, and it has the original carpets, seats and interior trim. The vinyl roof covering is very good, and the factory electric roof works as it should. This is a very good original car which has been owned by two husbands and wives, a rare car in this condition with this history.
